In the village of Åsen in Haurida, just outside Aneby, there will be a Christmas market on November 28–29 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. Stroll among the old houses, meet artisans, and warm up with a cup of mulled wine at the café.

Christmas Market and Christmas Decorations in Växjö

At the Småland Museum, you can meet local food producers and artisans on Sunday, November 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. Combine your visit to the market with a stroll through downtown and a visit to Växjö Cathedral. The Christmas light display in Växjö City is scheduled for the same day. Check the program at Växjö Citysamverkan before your visit.

Christmas Spirit in Jönköping and Huskvarna

Take a stroll through downtown Jönköping to browse the shops and enjoy a coffee break. In Huskvarna, “Gammeljul” will be held in Smedbyn on November 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The historic industrial area is a lovely place for an Advent stroll. Christmas Decorations in Nässjö and an Advent Trip to Värnamo

Nässjö’s Christmas window display event will take place on November 29 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Stores will have extended hours, and the Christmas window display will kick off Nässjö Winter Glow. Värnamo is also a great destination for those who want to stroll through a smaller town. This year’s dates and program for the Christmas window display in Värnamo are still to be confirmed.

Listen to Advent music in a church in Småland

Choral singing, candlelight, and familiar hymns are all part of the first Sunday of Advent. The Church of Sweden in Växjö has announced a High Mass at Östra Torsås Church on Sunday, November 29, at 11:00 a.m. Be sure to check the details about the Cantabile choir and the Advent coffee hour with the congregation before your visit.

The following tips are taken from the handout. Check the times and music program with the respective congregation before you go.

  • Skillingaryd Church, 4:00 p.m. – Advent Mass with choral singing.
  • Hagshult Church, 11:00 a.m. – Advent service with a choir.
  • Gårdsby Church outside Växjö, 10:00 a.m. – Advent Mass.
  • Näshult Church, 11:00 a.m. – Advent Mass, also listed in a local events calendar. The information about participating choirs and singing groups needs to be confirmed.

Take a winter walk and light the first candle

Pack a thermos of coffee and head out while it’s still light out. By the end of November, the first snow may have settled in the forest, or fog may still be hanging over the lake. A short walk is enough to get some fresh air before it’s time to head back inside to the warmth.

At home, you can put on some Christmas music and bake saffron buns. Shape the classic saffron buns, press in the raisins, and light the first candle when the buns come out of the oven. If you’d rather have a snack out and about, you can round off your visit to the Christmas market or church with a cup of coffee and something with saffron at a café.
