A national park where nature is left alone

Norra Kvill National Park is one of the few places in southern Sweden where the forest has been left untouched for over 150 years. Pine trees dominate here, their gnarled, tall trunks rising to the sky - some are up to 35 meters high and have a circumference of 2.5 meters. All around are spruces with hanging branches, and the ground is covered with soft, green moss mats.

The forest here is not planted, not prepared. It is wild, alive and at the same time restful for the soul.

Silence as an experience

It's quiet in Norra Kvill - but it's not an empty silence. It is a silence filled with life: the babbling of the brook, the drumming of the woodpecker, the song of the robin. It is a place where you can hear yourself think - and at the same time feel completely present in nature's own sounds.

It's hard not to be moved as you walk along the winding paths. Here and there are fallen giants covered in lichens and ticks, slowly returning to the earth. It's nature's own cycle - ongoing and untouched.

Hike to views and tranquility

The national park is well signposted and easy to find. A trail leads you through the central parts of the forest and past two small forest lakes. The larger of them, Stora Idgölen - also called Trollsjön - lies like a dark eye in the landscape, lined with water lilies and water clover. It's easy to linger here.

For those who want a view of the Småland highlands, we recommend the hike up to Idhöjden, the park's highest point. Here, 45 meters above the surface of the lake, the old-growth forest spreads out in all directions - a view that rewards both legs and mind.

Rest area and practical information

At the parking lot there are information boards, an accessible toilet and picnic tables. A bridge leads over to the Näckön picnic area, where you can sit down with a packed lunch and rest in the silence of the forest. There is also a barbecue area.

The national park is easy to reach by car. From the road between Vimmerby and Norra Vi, turn off about seven kilometers south of Ydrefors. After another two kilometers you reach the parking lot.

Kvilleken - Sweden's oldest and largest tree

If you have time to spare after the hike, a visit to the Kville Oak - also known as the Rumskulla Oak - is recommended . With a circumference of 14 meters and an estimated age of over 1,000 years, it is probably the largest oak in Europe.

It's a reminder of the passage of time. This oak has stood firm since the Viking Age - through the Dyke Death, the Dacke Feud and the rise of industrialization. Standing under its crown is an almost spiritual experience.
