Polar history that grabs you

The heart of Gränna Museum is Polar Center, where Sweden's largest collection of polar history objects awaits. Here you are thrown straight into Salomon August Andrée's mythical polar expedition from 1897 - a story of courage, technology, dreams and tragedy.

With scientific ambitions, Andrée, together with Knut Frænkel and Nils Strindberg, took off in the hydrogen balloon Eagle from Danskön in Svalbard. The goal: the North Pole. The reality was quite different. Thirty years later, their remains were found on the barren White Island, and questions still abound.

The Andrée Expedition exhibition is the crown jewel of the museum. You can see authentic objects, historical photographs, and a movie that follows the expedition from start to fateful end. There are also realistic figures, which allow you to get really close to the people behind the expedition.

A special place is given to Bea Uusma's research on the last days of the expedition. Through a combination of passion, science and intuition, she has contributed new theories about what actually happened on Vitön. It's exciting, personal and sometimes heartbreaking - a story that lingers long after the visit.

An icy contrast - Antarctica with Otto Nordenskjöld

The Polar Center does not stop at the Arctic. It also has a permanent exhibition on Sweden's first expedition to Antarctica (1901-1903)led by Otto Nordenskjöld. Through film, pictures and objects, you can follow this southern journey and the challenges the crew faced in the cold, unknown world.

Together, the Arctic and Antarctic provide a unique perspective on Sweden's role in the world's most inhospitable regions - and the people who dared to push the boundaries of what was possible.

More than just ice - local history and cultural heritage

Gränna Museum does not only offer polar fun. At the Museigården there is the Franckska farm, Gränna's oldest preserved building from the mid-17th century. It houses a local history exhibition with seven small rooms, each of which tells the story of an era or theme in Gränna's history.

You will meet, among others Valborg Franck, an enterprising teacher who ran a private school in her home, and of course you will meet the pride of the city: Amalia Erikson, the inventor of the candy cane. In one of the rooms, you will follow the sugar-cooking tradition from 1859 to today. It's personal, charming and full of stories from a small town with a big heart.

The museum's temporary exhibitions in the Gallery at the entrance showcases art, photography and ceramics - a calm and inspiring environment for those who want to wander around at their own pace. Both the Gallery and the local history exhibition are free to visit.

A place that stimulates the mind

For those traveling without children, Gränna Museum offers a comfortable pace, space for reflection and stories that appeal to an adult audience. It's quiet enough to really take in the details, read in peace and quiet and think about what these expeditions really say about man, nature and our history.

You can also join us on city walks in the footsteps of Amalia, or book tours for smaller groups. The museum also has a small but well-stocked museum shop, perfect for finding a personalized souvenir from your excursion.
