Eksjö Museum - a cultural treasure in the heart of the wooden town of Eksjö
A trip to Eksjö is like stepping straight into another time. Narrow cobbled streets, over 50 wooden houses and a town center with roots in the Middle Ages. In the middle of this well-preserved wooden town lies Eksjö Museum, a place where art, history and small-town charm meet - and an excursion we highly recommend during your stay at Smålandstorpet.

A museum with many faces
Here you can immerse yourself in contemporary art, local history and military culture, all gathered under the same roof - in a quiet oasis by the Eksjö River.
The museum's three permanent exhibitions offer a rich insight into the history of the city and the region:
- The Albert Engström exhibition showcases the artist's accurate drawings and paintings.
- The city history exhibition tells the story of Eksjö's development over six centuries.
- InSmåland Military History Museum you will meet another side of Eksjö - as a military town.
In addition, temporary exhibitions are held in the museum's galleries, often on themes related to contemporary art, culture or current social issues.
More than a museum - a living meeting place
The museum garden, with its beautiful herb garden by the riveris a place for rest, reflection and inspiration. Concerts, craft days and other cultural events are organized here - often in close collaboration with the city's local actors.
The museum shop is a nice stop in itself, with crafts, books, postcards and unique gifts reflecting the history and aesthetics of the region.
Aschanska Gården - a home that time forgot
Aschanska gården is a fully preserved bourgeois home from the turn of the last century. Located a stone's throw from the museum, this city farm has a fascinating history.
The Aschan family lived here for three generations, and when the last family member - Hedda Aschan - passed away in 1984, the house was left untouched. Today, the rooms still stand as if someone had just left them. Menus, furniture, handwritten recipes and business cards tell of another life, another time - and it's easy to imagine the murmur of a dinner or the sound of a piano.
During the summer, daily tours are held in both Swedish and English, making it easy for both Swedish and German guests to take part in the history.
The wooden town of Eksjö - a town with soul
Eksjö is not just any small town. It is one of Europe's best preserved wooden townswhose history stretches back to the 14th century. After a great fire in 1568, the town was rebuilt on a new site, and has since been relatively spared from destruction. This has resulted in a city center where 17th, 18th and 19th century wooden buildings coexist in a vibrant urban space.
The streets north of Stora torget follow a city plan from the 16th century, while the southern part bears traces of a city fire from 1856. Here you will find picturesque houses with plastered facades, old pharmacies, courtyards and buildings with both small-town charm and historical depth.
Eksjö was awarded the 1997 Europa Nostra Diploma for its well-preserved cultural environment - a recognition of the town's efforts to protect and promote its built heritage.
