Return visit to Store mosse

Why I keep coming back to Store Mosse National Park – hiking around Lilla Lövö, again and again

There are places you visit once, tick off your list, and move on from. You go there because you "have to," do your rounds, and feel satisfied.
And then there are places you return to. Not because you have to, but because something draws you back.

For me, Store Mosse National Park is one such place. And it is usually the hike around Lilla Lövö that attracts me. I have walked it many times – in different seasons, in different moods, sometimes alone and sometimes in company. Yet there is always something left to discover.

The first time – and every time after that

I don't remember the first time I walked around Lilla Lövö. That's actually quite telling. It wasn't a dramatic experience, no big moment that stuck in my mind. It was more of a quiet experience.

And maybe that's why it stuck.

Since then, hiking has become a regular habit. Not as a project or an achievement, but as something I return to when the need arises. When I want to get out but not go far. When I want to move, but not perform. When my thoughts are spinning too much—or when I have something I want to think through.

Store Mosse has the ability to accept me just as I am on that day, without demands or expectations.

Lilla Lövö – a hike that requires nothing

The hike around Lilla Lövö is not long. It is not difficult. There are no impressive elevation gains and no views that demand superlatives – and that is precisely why it works so well.

Here, I don't need to think about pace.
I don't need to reach a goal.
I don't even need to feel motivated.

The path leads me around, step by step, over footbridges and solid ground, through a landscape that feels open yet protective. The marsh spreads out, the horizon is low, and the sky takes center stage.

It is a hike that does not make any demands – but gives a lot in return.

Not getting distracted

There are hikes where you are constantly waiting for the next view or the next highlight. Here, it's the opposite. Nothing interrupts. Nothing demands attention. And that does something to the body.

My shoulders drop. My breathing becomes calmer. My steps become more even.
It's as if my body remembers something that everyday life often forgets.

Walking the same route – and still experiencing something new

Many people always want to discover something new when they travel. New places, new trails, new experiences. I understand that. But there is also value in returning.

As I walk around Lilla Lövö again, I recognize my surroundings. I know where the footbridge is a little more unstable, where the ground feels firmer, and where I often stop. It creates a sense of security.

At the same time, nothing is exactly the same. The light changes. The wind moves differently across the marsh. Bird life shifts with the seasons and the time of day.
And perhaps most importantly, I myself am never quite the same as I was last time.

Store Mosse as a place for reflection

There is something about marshland that invites reflection. Perhaps it is how the marsh and the sky meet without clear boundaries. Perhaps it is the silence, or the absence of distractions.

When I walk around Lilla Lövö, my thoughts often become clearer. Not because I try to think, but because I don't need to. My steps take over, my breathing becomes steady, and my gaze rests far away.

In a daily life filled with impressions, decisions, and noise, Store Mosse becomes a place where all of that can step aside.

The seasons – same place, different experiences

I have walked around Lilla Lövö at different times of the year, and it makes a big difference.

Spring is cautious. The ground slowly awakens, the birds are heard more clearly than they are seen, and the air feels light.
Summer is self-evident. Everything is in motion, green and alive.
Autumn is perhaps my favorite. The colors fade, the light becomes softer, and the stillness more palpable.
Winter is sparse and austere. Footsteps become more deliberate, sounds fewer, and time slows down.

Why I am happy to recommend Lilla Lövö to our guests

When guests at Smålandstorpet ask about excursions, I often mention Store Mosse – and Lilla Lövö in particular. Not as a must-see, but as an alternative for those looking for something peaceful.

The hike is suitable for many people. It does not require any special equipment. It does not take a whole day.
And yet it often gives you more than you think.

Many guests come back and say roughly the same thing:
"It was peaceful."
"It was nice."
"We needed it."

Returning – not to see more, but to recognize

I don't go to Store Mosse to discover something new every time. I go there to feel familiar. To have a moment where nothing needs to change.

At a time when so much revolves around development and the next step, it is liberating to walk the same path again. To know that it is there. That it is waiting.

Store Mosse as part of the stay at Smålandstorpet

For me, Store Mosse and Smålandstorpet belong together. Not geographically, but emotionally. Both offer something that doesn't scream for attention – something quiet and accessible.

Staying at Smålandstorpet and taking a day trip to Store Mosse is a natural part of the stay for many guests. Not as an activity, but as a break.

Just like the hike around Lilla Lövö.

That's why I'll keep going there.

I will continue to visit Store Mosse.
I will continue to walk around Lilla Lövö.

Not because I have to.
But because I want to.

Some places are not about finishing them.
They're about returning.

And sometimes that's exactly what you need.
